Alphabet the News
(2012)
Brief:
To illustrate the news every day for the better part of a month, using the alphabet as the basis for the visual language.
Idea:
Above you can see the result of hours of research, trial and error and adopting an illustration style heavily influenced by Matt Perry.
CESA: Central England School of Art
(2018)
Brief:
Create a unique identity for a fictional art school.
Idea:
Centrality is at the heart of everything Central England School of Art holds dear. CESA values creativity, innovation and imbuing the resolve and aspiration to realise your potential to their students. When asked to design the identity for CESA, it was clear that the name had everything needed to form a brand.
Development:
I was advised to draw from an art movement in order to find an aesthetic or set of principles I wished to draw from for my project. I came across and studied the Russian Constructivist movement. This embodied neutrality and letting the form be dictated by the purpose and not vice-versa. I also studied the iconography, the shapes used and how they were made. My research led me to typefaces influenced by the movement, weighing out the pros and cons of each.
The Untold Tale of Bigby Wolf
(2018)
Brief:
To write and illustrate a re-telling of the classic tale of Red Riding Hood, from the perspective of the Big Bad Wolf. To demonstrate the endurance and continuing relevance of the tale to this day.
Idea:
Fairy tales, stories we read to our children before they go to sleep at night. Myths have been spread for generations, from one perspective. But what if all isn't as it seems? Like any other story, there's always another point of view. With a modern setting, minus the supernatural - witness Bigby 'Big Bad' Wolf's story from innocence to life on the run.
Miscellaneous
‘Alas I Cannot Swim’
(2015)
Brief:
Visualise "Social Status" in the form of animation.
Idea:
Boy meets girl, falls in love and gets rejected by the parents. Cliche, but shows the effect money can have on people. Largely influenced by the work of Eoin Duffy and his "The Missing Scarf"
‘Breaking Bad’ Title Sequence
(2014)
Brief:
Portray a film/television series in the style of another genre through animation (20 seconds long).
Idea:
I chose to animate AMC's award-winning Breaking Bad in the style of Saul Bass. I made a lot of still imagery and used a limited palette. I added some photographs of textures to add the gritty, dangerous feel of the show.
